It is very important for any potential owner to learn about the typical traits of the Siberian Husky before entering the challenging commitment of living with one. If you want to adopt a Siberian husky, then you must have the knowledge of its characteristics, behavior & temperament. Siberian Huskies are hard to resist, with their joyful demeanor, friendliness, exuberance & incredible striking appearance.

The Artist

Siberian huskies have the ability to squeeze through the smallest of holes, break or chew their way out of a tie-out, and run through electric fences.  They are called the best escape artists and need a securely fenced in yard if you want to let them off a leash. They can easily jump or climb most fenced in areas that are 6 feet high. Moreover, they can dig out the underneath of the fence. Sometimes, they discover such plans for their escape route that you may have never even thought of. These intelligent dogs are always keen to learn something new. If you live with a Husky they will certainly teach you that you have never seen it all.

The Siberian Huskies are a natural athlete. They require exercise in some form. However, it is a misconception that the Siberian needs lots of open space. Adequate exercise can be achieved within a small fenced area or with daily walks.  Remember, though, that due to their strength, they should not be left solely in the care of a young child or less-than-physically-fit adult.

Siberian huskies have a natural tendency to dig and with awe. Sometimes you will find them them digging large craters in your yard.  Even they are able to find the sump pump leak, which is 3-4 feet under the ground.  They have an instinct to dig which can be curbed to some extent but not eliminated.

Many people condemn them to life as an outside dog seeing the beautiful thick coat. They are coated with a double insulated coat of hair which protects them from both heat and cold. It can easily survive in hot climate. When it is hot outside, they are seen cooling themselves by taking a bath in the mud.  You may have resorted to leaving a kiddie pool outside to let their Sibes cool off.

The Curious

Siberian huskies are very curious animal.  It is natural for them to want to attack and prey on small animals, such as squirrels, house cats, rabbits, and birds. They are swift, cunning and very unpredictable at times. This is why it is important for them to learn to share a home with others when they are still very young puppies. This socialization will make it possible for them to be in the same household as a smaller dog or a cat.

Siberian huskies are considered to be very pack oriented and gregarious. This breed has the ability to bond with humans or other dogs very easily. They can provide many years of companionship and entertainment for their owners. Sometime, it becomes hard to control them, but can also bring more joy and entertainment to their family than many other breeds. A husky’s temperament is  very sweet and  it is very affectionate. They love to run and to pull on their toys. It’s the cutest of them all. The most playful, joyful, the most friendly and stubborn. They love all people around them;adults, children, dog lovers even the dog haters. They enjoy plenty of time spent with them and affection shared with people.

Relationship With Children

Siberian huskies can’t understand a child’s behavior, it’s their nature. So it’s not good to left your children alone and unattended, even for a while. As the children and puppies have know idea of their own size and strength and could accidentally injure each other. But they can be a good companion of the younger. If you teach your child and new puppy how to behave around one another, then you shouldn’t have any problems.

Relationship With Other Dogs

Siberian Huskies generally do well with other dogs if they are trained properly. This breed has a friendly & a playful interest in most dogs. They are always ready to defend themselves whenever attacked. Though a small dog or any cat should not be left alone with a Siberian Husky, you can feel safe by providing proper training &  socializing.

As the Siberian Huskies are extremely intelligent and stubborn, training of this breed is quite challenging. They are not always eager to please, unless they know that they have an incentive to do so. You will get them starring at you rather understand the command and it seems like they are not listening at all. They might talk back when you ask them to sit and soon you will find yourself having a conversation with your Siberian about why he or she should sit for you.  But you can easily handle a husky with consistency & patience. You should train the dog when he is young. Give it a job and see how he excels. Put him in obedience classes and you will get the result very quickly.

The most important characteristics of the Siberian Husky are medium size, moderate bone, well-balanced proportions, ease and freedom of movement, proper coat, pleasing head and ears, correct tail, and good disposition.

A Siberian Husky should be taken running, hiking, and/or biking every day, always on-leash, for he is independent and born to run. Especially they love the SNOW. If it is snowing outside, they will just make you crazy until you let them out. If you fail to provide these opportunities it will become unhappy and turn into a destructive animal. He loves the great outdoors and requires vigorous exercise, especially in cool weather. Teaching him to pull carts and sleds gives him a purpose in life.

A Siberian Husky is not a guard dog as he is not overly suspicious of strangers and the other breeds. It behaves friendly to a stranger and can entertain him like it’s owner. Huskies typically don’t bark, but they make a “woo woo woo” sound while they are with their owners.

You should keep it in the coolest area of your house to provide a healthy living. Keeping it in a warm place may cause various skin infections.
